A NEW BIRTH OF FREEDOM
Reflections on the Civil War: 150 YEARS HENCE
A series of performances, exhibits, lectures
and discussions of a time that changed our nation

OCTOBER 18–29, 2011
NEW BEDFORD, MA

The Zeiterion Performing Arts Center, The New Bedford Civil War Round Table, The Fort Tabor Military Museum, The New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park, and the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick together commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the American Civil War

The Barter Theatre, one of America's premiere theatre companies, brings to life the stirring and passionate true stories of the people who lived through the greatest conflict in our nation's history. Told in their own words and woven with music of the period, the performance will inspire you in ways you never thought possible. This play is filled with the courage, sacrifice, personal suffering and triumph of the people and time that galvanized our nation, giving a perspective on the Civil War that is not contained in any history books.

Over 150 years ago, Americans struggled with issues of slavery, race, freedom, equality, states' rights, and America's future. In the 1858 Illinois Senate race, Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas embarked on a series of debates. Their epic clash of ideas and oratory forged a future President and a nation. LA Theatre Works production of The Rivalry is a riveting depiction of the Lincoln-Douglas debates, using dialogue from the original debate transcripts to bring to life the fierce competition between the future President and the incumbent Senator as they tackled the day's most controversial issues. The Rivalry is also a stunning testament to the willingness of Lincoln and Douglas to put aside their differences and "reach across the aisle" for the good of the country.
